Why not start small:

Ammo system 0.1: Repack mag functionality

Ammo system 0.2: Fill up larger mags from smaller ones, and vice-versa, i.e 200rnd box from 30rnd Stanags, until one type or the other is full up. 

Honestly, this would cover my needs more or less fully. I can be further developed to allow mixing ammo types (assuming the game engine handles this), chambering single rounds, handling empty magazines, and so on ad infinitum!

Valtiel,  is it possible to create a realistic LMG and HMG loadout?  

1:3 Tracers,  1:5 Tracers

what i mean by this is,  when you pick up a IE:   100 Rd .50 Cal Box.   it comes loaded with every 5th round is a tracer,  just for that realism stand point.  

or say a 200 round 5.56 SAW Box is every 5th , or the 7.62 100 round box would be every 3rd round. 

I understand the limitation for creating shotgun "Alternate" loading methods,  but the standard loadout would be as such for LMG/HMG.
